Cultural practices and ethnic variations of what is deemed as culturally appropriate behaviors can have a detrimental effect on an individuals’ psychological well-being.
BIPOC individuals face a unique set of cultural challenges and are at higher risk for mental health related issues due to the negative cultural stigma surrounding mental health.
South Asians have multiple factors that contribute to poor mental health which may include: immigration, acculturation, racial trauma and discrimination, familial pressures and expectations, academic pressures, interpersonal or domestic violence, substance use and addiction, intergenerational trauma, traditional and patriarchal practices and lack of education and information regarding mental health.
